District Conference

I was in Rochester, MN over the weekend for the District 6 Toastmasters Conference. I was honored along with 12 others for earning my Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) award. What was especially exciting was that two other members of my club, also earned their DTMs.

I also gave a toast to the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada (our district includes a part of Canada). You would think that was easy, but it's actually interesting to experience giving a short toast that cannot have any mistakes in it in front of a large crowd. Rest assured everything went well (especially because a friend suggested I remember to bring a glass to the microphone to toast with!) It certainly gives me an appreciation of all of the details that go into planning a conference like that.

How to Vote for a Judge When You Don't Know Anything

This Star Tribune commentary helps to answer the question posed. How do you vote for judges? I remember being at the polling booth one year and hearing a voter say "voting for judges, what a waste!" I disagree - voting for judges is an opportunity not to be squandered or abused or it will be taken away. For Minnesota Judicial elections, you can look up information and candidate profiles at: http://www.minnlawyer.com/elections/2008/index.cfm Don't take the commentary as letting us off the hook to default to encumbants, but rather to look at the qualifications and qualities of candidates.

Put the U.S. Back Together

It's Friday and time for a little distraction. Put the states in their proper places with this puzzle. Maybe we should have the candidates do this to see who is fastest at putting the nation back together?

Attorneys Support Funding the MN Judiciary

In the past we have called upon and received the bar’s institutional support. For the upcoming year, we also need your individual and personal support. That means attorneys all around the state contacting their elected officials and explaining how local constituents will be impacted by further reductions –in your own words, using the examples of your own clients. Because ultimately, this isn’t just about funding a system; it’s about the ability of Minnesotans to receive the justice they expect and deserve –and our joint responsibility to provide it.

Chief Justice Magnuson, State of the Judiciary Speech -2008

The MSBA is responding to Chief Justice Magnuson’s call for support with1000supporters.org as a way for lawyers to commit to supporting adequate funding for the justice system. When you sign up, you can view specific information on the funding situation of the courts, legal aid, and public defenders. We will provide you updated information as the situation develops, and suggest specific action that you can take to help maintain the quality of our justice system. This should take just an hour or two of your time over the next several months; a valuable investment in the justice system.

As a busy lawyer you have any number of opportunities to help your community. This is another request, but an urgent one. Please sign up for 1000supporters today by clicking on this link: http://www.1000supporters.org/?xgi=3lKIYj6 .
