Quick Report from AALL

Hi, I was out at the law librarian's conference in Portland. Here's a quick update:

Westlaw has some new interfaces:

tax.westlaw.com for (big surprise) tax. It allows for a global search that organizes top hits by category.

compliance.westlaw.com for compliance information in a number of areas.

citeadvisor.westlaw.com
- no kidding, it's suppose to help you get your Bluebook citations correct.

Other websites:

heinonline.org - added a "my heinonline" feature so individual users can customize bookmarks.

http://icyte.com - in beta, this is a research management software. Highlight the part of the document you like and it saves the document with the highlighting. You can annotate your entry in the database.

http://lexisweb.com/ - free legally oriented search engine from Lexis.

Here's the flower (yellow, red & blue) I painted so West would donate money to the Arbor Foundation. I know, don't quit the day job!

When the Situation Looks Bad

There is no doubt that these are tough economic times for many. The gas prices don't help as they drive up the price of some commodities so high, many individuals and businesses cannot keep up with expenses.

So what strategies can we use to avoid being overwhelmed by our circumstances?

Adjust Short Term Strategies: We cannot ignore the fact that goods and services cost more and maybe we are making less money. Scale back on unnecessary expenses. When you splurge, "make it count." Consider additional sources of income. Review expenses to see what can be cut either permanently or temporarily.

Look for the "Upside!" Fewer people are on the road these days at any given time due to the price of gas. This has led to a fewer traffic deaths. It means lower demand for gas and less damage to the environment. Businesses and government will have to be even more efficient. If we rise to the challenge of tough times, we will learn new skills and apply our creativity. During low times, the career education market expands. Consider retooling your skills or starting a career in education or people development.

Look Long Term: Markets move in cycles. Solid investments and careers will likely survive. Review what you have invested your finances and yourself into. Does it have staying power? If yes, then you are likely in the right place and you can wait out the storm. If you are not risk adverse, this would be a good time to invest in emerging fields.

Keep a Positive Attitude: Worrying about the economy won't change the economy. Do what you need to do to remain as secure as you can be and then live your life.

Peace,

Road Trip!

I am traveling quite a bit this summer, I bet many of you will as well. If you are taking a road trip, here is a handy calculator to help with budgeting:

I returned recently from a bus trip out to Rapid City. If you brave the bus, you might find it a great way to meet people.

On the theme of Independence Day, I did sit next to a mother of four who was on her way to study for a citizenship exam. What a great way to lead up to the fourth of July! I wonder how well the average citizen born in the U.S. would do on the exam?

When we changed buses, I met a man from the South who was coming to Minneapolis for a fresh start. I suppose that means different things to different people, but we all need a fresh start in one way or another in different points in our lives. Not everyone will take an epic bus ride to get that start and it is not always our choice to start over, but we will all face change in our lives.

The question is how will who we are manifest itself in times of great change? After an unplanned extra couple of hours in Souix Falls, he said "Ain't nothin'. Can't worry about nothin'." I think he will be fine.

I just got back from presenting at a regional Toastmasters conference on Improving Our Relationship with Time and I am following that up with a four part teleclass series starting July 16th. Sign up below:

By the way, as part of my research, I rode the bus over 1200 miles. Nothing like putting theory into practice.
