Today is the celebration of Cinco de Mayo or the 5th of May. Mexicans fighting French invaders successfully defended a fort with 2000 troops against 6000 troops. This celebration symbolizes Mexican independence.
One of the heroes of this story is, not surprisingly, a lawyer (Did you know Nelson Mandela and Ghandi were both lawyers?). President Benito Juárez, a lawyer and full blooded Zapotec Indian led the resistance. While the French did eventually install their own government, the Mexicans continued to pursue independence and the rule of the French was short.
Today, those of us who are not Mexican can join those of Mexican heritage and celebrate freedom and independence!
